Slow burn: the insidious effects of surface fires on tropical forests

چکیده

simplicity of the Robertson–Price/Lande–Arnold approach for describing selection, these recent studies underline the need for more caution in describing the forces of natural selection. They provide strong evidence that environmental covariances can bias our estimates of selection; in doing so, the results highlight the benefits to be gained by considering genetic, rather than simply phenotypic, measures when trying to understand the evolution of quantitative traits. Theyalsoprovidea potential explanation for thewidespread lack of correspondence between predicted and observed evolutionary trajectories in natural populations [12].

A soil burn severity index for understanding soil-fire relations in tropical forests.

Methods for evaluating the impact of fires within tropical forests are needed as fires become more frequent and human populations and demands on forests increase. Short- and long-term fire effects on soils are determined by the prefire, fire, and postfire environments. We placed these components within a fire-disturbance continuum to guide our literature synthesis and develop an integrated soil...

Variability of transparent organic particles in Arctic floodplain lakes

The predominant technique for tracking wildfires uses repeat satellite observations to look for and measure the size of burn scars, the charred remains of once-lush terrain. Because it relies on moderateresolution imagery, this approach has a tendency to miss the smaller fires that, though less widely devastating, can still account for a sizeable portion of the total burned area. Small fires ca...

Effects of high-frequency understorey fires on woody plant regeneration in southeastern Amazonian forests.

Anthropogenic understorey fires affect large areas of tropical forest, yet their effects on woody plant regeneration post-fire remain poorly understood. We examined the effects of repeated experimental fires on woody stem (less than 1 cm at base) mortality, recruitment, species diversity, community similarity and regeneration mode (seed versus sprout) in Mato Grosso, Brazil. From 2004 to 2010, ...

Effects of Fires on Peat Swamp and Lowland Dipterocarp Forests in Kalimantan, Indonesia

The effects of the fires that burned over 4.7 million ha of Indonesia’s tropical forests during 1997 and 1998 are largely unknown. We assess the immediate impacts of these fires on five forest areas representing several different habitats in Kalimantan 1-2 months after the fires went out. Comparisons of transects in burned and unburned forest areas were conducted at three sites: Tanjung Puting ...

Global burned area and biomass burning emissions from small fires

Global burned area and biomass burning emissions from small fires" (2012). NASA Publications. Paper 144. [1] In several biomes, including croplands, wooded savannas, and tropical forests, many small fires occur each year that are well below the detection limit of the current generation of global burned area products derived from moderate resolution surface reflectance imagery. Although these fi...
